Tee Keat Reprimanded As A Matter Of Principle ?

Tee Keat Reprimanded As A Matter Of Principle - Najib

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Friday reiterated that the Cabinet reprimanded Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat as a matter pf principle for overstepping his boundary in commenting on another ministry's affairs.

"When it comes to government, the principle is very clear, you cannot transcend into another ministry's responsibility," the Deputy Prime Minister told reporters after presenting DRB-Hicom Deftech scholarships to armed forces children studying in public institutions of higher learning.

He was asked to further comment on the Cabinet's action on Wednesday to reprimand Tee Keat, who is also MCA vice-president, for his allegation that government officers had misused funds earmarked for the refurbishment of several Chinese schools in Johor.

Najib said: "The decision was taken at the Cabinet level where all party heads were there."

Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said he would meet MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting over the matter next week.

Mustapa, who was tasked by the Cabinet to inform the MCA vice-president about the reprimand, told reporters that he would report to Ka Ting, who is Housing and Local Government Minister, the outcome of his meeting with Tee Keat yesterday.

On Wednesday, Mustapa apologised to the Education Ministry for his deputy's action which had offended the ministry's officers.

The Cabinet decision on Wednesday reprimanding Ong for speaking up against “leakages” and abuses of funds in school repair projects is a shame and disgrace for the following reasons:

•It shows a “half-past six” Cabinet which is incapable of living up to Abdullah’s pledge to make anti-corruption and misappropriation of public funds his most important legacy;

•It highlights the shocking inability of the Cabinet to distinguish between right and wrong, and a proper sense of national priorities – as confirmed by the statement by the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak that he did not want to “discuss the facts of the issue”. Clearly “cover up” continues to be more important to “opening up” the government to the scrutiny of accountability and transparency.

•The failure of the four MCA Ministers in Cabinet to stand up not only for Ong but what the MCA Youth leader, Datuk Liow Tiong Lai has described as a clear case of “black and white”. If the four MCA Ministers cannot stand up for what is right and wrong in a case involving RM30,000, how can the people expect them to take any stand on Ninth Malaysia Plan development expenditures involving RM220 billion in the next five years?

DAP MPs will question the misplacement of priorities by Hishammuddin in Parliament in the Ministerial winding-up of the budget debate next week. Can we expect support from principled MPs, not only from MCA, but also Gerakan, MIC, UMNO and other Barisan Nasional component parties

Reformasi Mooncake anyone ?

Tian Chua is promoting the mooncake here.

Mooncake is a special festival food for the season of autumn. The Mooncake Festival sometimes also known as Lantern Festival (Pesta Tanglung) in Malaysia falls on the 15th of the 8th month of Chinese lunar calendar. The actual name of the festival is called Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节).

The exceptional aspect of Mid-Autumn Festival is that it has always been linked to struggle. The genesis of mooncake itself is the legend of uprising against tyranny. It is said that mooncake was created by a brilliant advisor of Zhu Yuan Zhang (朱元璋) as a device to call for revolt.

Inside the mooncake a slip of paper was hidden telling the people to rise up against repression. The uprising successfully overthrew the despotic regime and Zhu ascended to be the emperor.(more)

“BN MP: Pak Lah Must Do More to Dismantle Mahathirism”

I like what Zaid Ibrahim, the Kota Bharu Umno MP (who incidentally defeated my uncle in the 2004 elections) said about the current crisis between Tun Dr. Mahathir and Pak Lah in Parliament yesterday:

During his (Mahathir’s) time, we saw the creation of instant millionaires, judges were sacked, amendments were made to the Federal Constitution and judicial review to ministerial decisions were removed…

Zaid further described Mahathirism as the quest for power by all means.

While condemning Mahathir is now a prerequisite for all BN MPs, Zaid did not reserve his criticisms only on the former premier, as he said Mahathir is getting support for his criticisms because of Pak Lah’s lack of leadership:

Although there is Islam Hadhari (mooted by Abdullah) and his emphasis on transparency, integrity and openness, the premier has yet to make any real reforms…

We should not think of their (Abdullah-Mahathir) dispute too much. The political question is not important. What is important is where the government is heading to.

If we need radical changes, we should do it.

I absolutely agree!
