Final Appeal To Dr Mahathir

Final Appeal To Dr Mahathir - To Withdraw Candidacy As Umno Delegate

With one more day to go before the Kubang Pasu Umno Division delegates meeting, its head Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum has made a final appeal to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to withdraw his candidacy as a delegate to the Umno General Assembly in November.

Johari said he had sent a letter to the former party president and former prime minister urging him not to take part in the contest on Saturday for it would not ap
propriate for him as a statesman.

"This is a final appeal before the divisional delegates meeting on Saturday. I humbly make this appeal to Tun," he said while keeping his emotion in check at a press conference that was attended by most of the division's committee members.

Although the former prime minister was not barred from
contesting, he said the division hoped that he would withdraw to safeguard his image.

Mohd Johari said he had high regard for Dr Mahathir who had headed the division for 30 years.

"We have not asked anything from Tun. We just want to appeal to Tun," he said.

When asked what if Dr Mahathir ignored the appeal, Mohd Johari said: "It's his right. If he wants to contest, we will not stop him. But I'll be sad," he said.

Mohd Johari, who is also Deputy Internal Security Minister, said Dr Mahathir, who has received 15 nominations, was among 17 candidates vying to be seven elected delegates to the Umno general assembly.

Dr M's ex-Pol Sec denies bid to prevent him being delegate

Umno Kubang Pasu division chief Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum denied that he had been instructed to ensure Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not succeed in becoming a delegate of the division to the party's general assembly in November.

"I have not instructed any member not to vote for h
im (Dr Mahathir). It is up to them," he told reporters in the Parliament lobby.

He was responding to a statement by the former Prime Minister who claimed Mohd Johari was leading the effort to prevent him from becoming a delegate.

Johari, who is the Deputy Minister of Internal Security, said Dr Mahathir could have made the claim out of anger after he received so few nominations to stand as a delegate.

"He only received 16 nominations from the 143 branches," he said. The division will elect seven delegates out of the 16 candidates at its meeting this Saturday while six office-bearers qualified as delegates automatically. Johari also denied Dr Mahathir's allegation that Umno Secretary-General Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad had "camped" in the divi
sion to influence the vote.

"Radzi has not come to my division. We also have not invited him or held any function requiring his presence in Kubang Pasu.

"However, he (Radzi) needs to pass through Kubang Pasu to reach his division," he said.

Johari, who was Dr Mahathir's former political secretary, took over as Kubang Pasu head after the former Premier stepped down.

SUPPORTERS of former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad are reported to be on the verge of launching a newspaper.

This tabloid would help to spread his views to the kampungs, reports said yesterday.

The Malaysiakini news website said that the debut issue of Malay-language tabloid Putra Post would be published this week.

There will be an initial print run of 50,000 copies, which are due to hit the newstands ahead of this Saturday's controversial Kubang Pasu Umno division meeting.

Tun Dr Mahathir is hoping that the meeting will elect him as a delegate to attend the Umno annual assembly in November. But he has claimed that the government is going all out to block his election following his criticism of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi.

He also claims his attacks on the Abdullah administration are being blacked out by the media.

A source was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying that the tabloid was needed to publicise Tun Dr Mahathir's views, which are now available only on the Internet.

'The Internet does not reach out to those in the kampungs and rural areas. So we hope Putra Post will fix this problem,' the source was reported as saying.

He also said the tabloid will contain detailed information on contentious issues raised by Tun Dr Mahathir.

The former premier's attacks on the Abdullah administration have ranged from accusations of nepotism and corruption to complaints that it is damaging the economy and reversing major decisions made when he was in power

The website said that the paper, which would have a cover price of RM2.50, was funded by several businessmen with close ties to Tun Dr Mahathir.

Who is the Prime Minister?

Lim Kit Siang wrote :

'It would be most hilarious if it had not been so serious a matter.

Just before Parliament ended yesterday, the Barisan Nasional MP for Arau, Datuk Seri Syed Razlan Ibni Syed Putera Jamalullail was lamenting about the low standards of civic sense in the country, even in government departments.

As example, he said the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya had flown the national flag upside down for two months and he had captured it on film.

This caused the interjection by the Barisan Nasional MP from Muar, Razali Ibrahim who referred to a survey which showed there are students who do not know when Merdeka was achieved.

Syed Razlan upped the ante and recounted how in a recent radio programme, a student was asked who is the Prime Minister. The answer – Dr. Mahathir.

This is a sad reflection on the student and the education system. But even more serious, it is also a pathetic reflection on the current Prime Minister, Datuk S
eri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

When I interrupted to point out that such a sad state of affairs is not surprising when UMNO and UMNO Youth leaders themselves do not respect the Prime Minister and UMNO President, as illustrated by the open protest staged by Balik Pulau UMNO Youth against the Penang Chief Minister, Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon in Abdullah’s presence at the official opening of UMNO Tanjong Division premises the previous day.

I asked Syed Razlan whether he agreed that such a public protest was not only a “slap-in-in-the-face” for Tsu Koon but also for Abdullah. No
t surprisingly, the MP for Arau diplomatically declined to give a response.'
