Malaysia not a police state !

Malaysia not a police state !

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan has refuted Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s claim that Malaysia is a police state.

He said the police had never threatened, quizzed or arrested anyone who held or intended to hold any public gathering or rally for the former Prime Min-ister.

The police had in fact, provided extra protection and security for Dr Mahathir since the July pepper spray incident in Kelan-tan, he said in a statement yesterday (Oct 31).

“We have never created an atmosphere of a police state as claimed by Tun. Since I took over as the IGP, I have had numerous open discussions with various organisations, including the Bar Council and (other) NGOs with regards to grouses and complaints about the force,” he added.

“We have never rejected any applications for gatherings un-less our investigations reveal that they threaten public order and security.”

Dr Mahathir had during a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Oct 27, claimed that the police had threatened and disturbed people intending to hold gatherings that could possibly criticise the Prime Min-ister. Musa said the police had never threatened anyone and if a permit had been issued for a gathering, they would monitor the gathering.

The group of Umno veterans who brokered the four-eye meeting between the prime minister and his combative predecessor has written to several cabinet members to explain why Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad called two press conferences after that.

The association of former Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen (Mubarak) had sent letters to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and several Umno cabinet ministers and mentris besar.

This followed Mubarak's meeting with Mahathir at the Perdana Leadership Foundation yesterday, their second such meeting this month.

During the meeting, it is believed Mahathir handed over a transcript of the two-hour dialogue to four Mubarak members led by Tan Sri Khalid Abdullah.

t also explained why Mahathir continued to criticise the government and the leadership.

Najib said: "We had encouraged the meeting between Tun and Prime Minister Abdullah. It was Mubarak's initiative and they had played a role for the prime minister and Tun to meet. The meeting did not end the way we had hoped."

In Shah Alam, Umno Information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib said Umno may not be able to stop Mahathir's tirade but the members must stand solidly in support of the leadership for the party and country's interests. He said next month's Umno General Assembly was the best forum for members to express their undivided support to the party leaders so they can concentrate on the country's development.

"We want to ask Mahathir to stop criticising, I don't think we are able to do that but more importantly the members must show they are solidly behind the government,"

Also,Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak warned the government must not alienate citizens by becoming distracted by its bitter feud with ex-premier Mahathir Mohamad.

Najib, heir apparent to embattled Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, said the administration must continue rolling out major projects under a national development plan.

"Above all, the effort, focus, concentration must not be sidetracked," he told a press conference. "We don't want to lose focus."

"I think we want to see the full concentration of the government towards fulfilling our promise to the people and to implement projects and programmes," he said.

"At the end of the day, the government needs the support of the people. The best way for the government to get support is to ensure our promises are delivered."

Asked whether the government had already begun to lose its way, he replied only that: "We will have to manage. This is unprecedented. It is not something that we have experienced before."

"We will ensure the government, especially the prime minister, has the full support of members of the cabinet, administration as well as party members," Najib reiterated on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Abdullah, who is attending the ASEAN-China summit in Nanning, China, told reporters the bitter row with Mahathir was not alienating voters and said he was open to any discussion to eject the former premier from the party.

"I am open to discussing anything at the Supreme Council meeting," he said.

"(As far as) I'm concerned, I am always open. Anything that is important for UMNO to discuss is okay with me," he added

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi believes his differences with his predecessor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will not alienate Malaysians and the people have to decide on what they want.

Asked if Malaysians were alienated by the situation between him and Dr Mahathir, he said: "No, I think Malaysians will have to decide on what they want, what they would like to do and what they are looking for if they want me to concentrate on what I am doing with my colleagues."

Asked if Dr Mahathir would be expelled, he said: I'm not sure such matters were the subject of discussions. I do not wish to comment on that."

Malaysia PM: Asia, China To Push Aternative Energy

Southeast Asian nations will cooperate with China to develop alternative sources of energy because the region cannot rely on fossil fuels, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Tuesday, the Kyodo news service reported.

Abdullah, speaking after a series of meetings held between leaders of China and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, said recent high oil prices had taught the region a lesson, Kyodo reported.

Energy was also high on the agenda at a meeting between Malaysia and China, held on the sidelines of the main events being held in the southern Chinese city of Nanning.

After the bilateral meeting, Abdullah announced that Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas firm, Petronas, had signed a deal worth $25 billion over 25 years to supply liquefied natural gas to Shanghai LNG Co., Kyodo reported.

Abdullah, who celebrated three years in office Tuesday, said, "We cannot depend forever on fossil fuels, which are depletable. We must go for other sources of energy that are renewable and environmentally friendly."

He said in his country's bilateral meeting with China, Chinese officials had said there needs to be cooperation on finding alternative energy sources with ASEAN members.

Abdullah said the series of meetings - including a commemorative summit, a trade fair, an investment forum and bilateral meetings - had been "beneficial" to both China and ASEAN countries, Kyodo reported.

As well as the LNG deal, Petronas also announced in Nanning a deal with Chinese carmaker Nanjing Automobile Corp. to produce the Malaysian firm's engines. The project is scheduled to start in 2009, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 units, Kyodo reported.

Singapore Today Editor-In-Chief Resigns - Sources

Today newspaper chief executive and editor-in-chief Mano Sabnani has resigned and will leave the newspaper in the next month, people familar with the situation said Tuesday.

State broadcaster MediaCorp., which is the majority owner of the daily freesheet, wouldn't confirm Sabnani's resignation.

"When there are major changes in our management line-up, we will issue a media statement accordingly," a MediaCorp spokeswoman said in an email.

Sabnani referred questions to MediaCorp's corporate communications department.

Launched in November 2000, Today has built a daily readership of 550,000 with independent commentary that has occasionally tested the limits of the Singapore government's tolerance for media criticism.

In July the paper dropped one of its columnists, popular local blogger Mr Brown, after the government stridently attacked an article he wrote that poked fun at a spate of price increases in the wake of May's general elections.

Singapore Press Holdings Ltd. (T39.SG), which publishes the city-state's biggest circulation English daily The Straits Times, owns 40% of the MediaCorp unit that publishes Today.

Malaysian Cleric Hussein Ye Explains Why the Jews "Have Incurred the Wrath of Allah" and Why "The Christians Have Gone Astray"

Following are excerpts from Malaysian cleric Hussain Ye, which aired on Peace TV on October 17, 2006.

Hussain Ye:

You know why Allah cursed the Jews and the nasara [Christians]? When we say: "Show us the right path, the path of those whom You have favored." We want the way that Allah has blessed upon the prophets, the companions – the sahaba – the salehin, that is the way we want to follow. And then we ask Allah: "Not the path of those who have incurred Your wrath, nor of those who have gone astray." Amen. We do not want the way that people whom you cursed - maghdub... When you see the word maghdub... ghadab is anger - Allah refers to who? Who does Allah refer to? Who does Allah refer to, brothers? Alyahud [the Jews]. "Nor of those who have gone astray." And those who have turned astray. Who does Allah refer to? Who does Allah refer to? Nasara [the Christians]. Why, why doesn't Allah refer to the Hindus, the Buddhists, the mushrikeen [polytheists]? He refers to the Jews and Christians. Always in the Koran, when it says maghdub – ghadab it goes to the Jews, and "those who have gone astray" goes to the Christians. Do you know why, brothers? We have been reciting these verses every day. You should know. I don't have to tell you. I believe you know, so I don't have to tell you. Do you know? You know, Allah be praised. Do you all know? Something... I know something here, something there. Allah be praised. Now this is important. If you do not know, you must ask. Ask your sheik. Ask the right teacher, your imam, your scholars. They are around you. You must not assume: "I think I know." Then you are in trouble. You are lucky. You know why? Because the not-yet-Muslim doesn't ask you about this. If the not-yet-Muslim asks you, you will get panicked, you will get confused. If you give them the wrong answer, you create fitna in this deen [religion].

Because the Jews - they have gone so far against Allah's commands. They like to do a lot of things that are very extreme. The most extremist nation in this world is the Jews. So if they used "extremists," it doesn't apply to Muslims. It applies to the Jews. They are the extremists in the world. That's why they kill the Palestinians every day. They have no respect for the United Nations. Why? Why don't they respect the United Nations? Do you know why, brothers? Who is the United Nations? Who is the United Nations? Even Allah, he makes promises with Allah, the Jew who makes promises with Allah breaks the promise with Allah. He doesn't even respect Allah. How can he respect the United Nations? And how can we depend on them? We cannot depend on them. Allah never said: You depend... He said: Depend on me. Don't depend on other people. Allah is the place for all others to hang on, to depend on. They don't have respect for whatever the United Nations wants to say, whatever NATO wants to say, whatever the world wants to say. If they want to kill, they kill, because they believe that they are the chosen people. They are children of God. The blood that flows in the body of the Jew is the blood of God. It is holy. And the blood that is not Jewish – they are all like animals, you can kill them, and they don't feel that it is a sin. Do you know that? They believe that Paradise belongs to them. They have the right to go to Paradise, other than the Jew they don't go to Paradise. They go to Hell. That's why we call them "the people that have gone too extreme." They changed the word of God. What Allah made harram [forbidden], they make hallal [permitted]. This is what happened to them.
